Frequently Asked Questions

Learner licences, the DKT, and how DKT PassRight works.

Is the DKT PassRight practice test free?

Yes. Every practice question, road sign guide and study page on DKT PassRight is 100% free, with no registration required.

What is the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)?

The DKT is the computer-based multiple-choice test learner drivers must pass to get a learner (L) licence in Australia and New Zealand. It covers road rules, signs, and safe road usage.

How many questions are on the real DKT?

This varies by state, typically between 30 and 45 multiple-choice questions, and you generally need to score at least 90% to pass. Check your state road authority for the exact pass mark.

Can I study for the DKT offline?

Yes, you can download your state’s official driver handbook PDF directly from DKT PassRight to study offline.

Do the rules differ between states?

Most core road rules are consistent across Australia, but some signage, penalties and licensing steps differ by state or territory. Always check your local road authority’s handbook for the exact rules that apply to your test.

Is DKT PassRight affiliated with a government road authority?

No. DKT PassRight is an independent, free study resource and is not affiliated with any state road authority, RTA, or transport department.

What’s the difference between a learner (L), P1 and P2 licence?

A learner (L) licence lets you drive only with a qualified supervising driver. A P1 (red P) licence is your first stage of solo driving with restrictions; a P2 (green P) licence follows with fewer restrictions, before you graduate to a full licence.

How do I book my Driver Knowledge Test?

Bookings are made directly through your state or territory’s road authority (for example Service NSW, TMR Queensland, VicRoads, or Waka Kotahi NZTA). DKT PassRight is a free study resource only — we don’t process bookings.

What happens if I fail the DKT?

You can usually retake the test, though most authorities require a short waiting period and an additional fee. Check your local road authority for exact retest rules.

Do I need to bring anything to the test?

Typically photo ID, proof of address, and any required application forms. Some states also require an eye test on the day. Confirm requirements with your local road authority before attending.
